The default UI system powering Vercel's v0. shadcn/ui has been an unmitigated success, and it happened by doing the opposite of what every other component library does. Instead of installing components you can't touch into node_modules, you run a CLI command and the actual source files drop into your project. You own the code. You edit it directly. shadcn joined Vercel as a design engineer in 2023, shortly after launching the project, and has since shaped how AI tools generate frontend code. Guillermo Rauch called it work that "changed the way we think about building and distributing UI."
